I think it was Jenn who was saying that had he not been an entertaining, humorous man, he would not have had much credibility. But, since he did, he was much more believable and easy to pay attention to. I think that in order to be a great teacher, individuals ought to possess a sense of humor, just as he did. Also, if you're not going to make jokes and laugh about certain situations, you will never get out alive...and I think the students will realize this.
After reading my section of his book, I realized even more so that this profession is about who you know and what resources you have. If you do not make friends with your colleagues, it is going to be a very bumpy ride. I think after years of hearing to not sit in the teacher's lounge because all they do is break down students, I realized that I should not dismiss this idea so quickly. The other teachers in there may not be dissing students...and if not, it's a great way to build camaraderie with them. Also, about resources--as students we have basically been told to never be resourceful...teachers want everything to be your own ideas, etc....which I understand. However, now, we have to realize that is absolutely OK to be resourceful. In fact, we NEED to use our resources.
K, that's all :) See you guys Thurs.

Beki,
I think you made some excellent points! Listening to a humorous and entertaining speaker is much better and informative than a boring, monotoned individual. Wong caught my attention and interest by his jokes.
I have already realized through my visits to South West on Fridays that making friends with your colleagues, especially those in your department, really helps make for better days. It is so nice to have someone to go to and talk to whether you are feeling down and need a pick up or if something exciting happened that you want to tell someone.
I would also agree that being resourceful is OK. During student teaching is a great time to gather resources. We are being given the opportunity to gather materials from other teachers for when we get our own classroom!
What an exciting time for all of us! See you ladies soon! :)
Cool, Beki!
I definitely agree that having a sense of humor enhances your teaching a lot. Like most environments, humor makes relationships and situations better.
However, I am curious as to when you were told to never be resourceful. When did that happen? I have to say that I've never had a teacher say anything along those lines, but rather encourage resourcefulness. Nonetheless, I'm really curious to hear more about your experience.
Finally, thanks for giving a positive view of teacher lounges. that was refreshing and a good reminder.
Thanks!

I was just saying that there have been numerous times that my roommates had ideas about projects that I was doing, and I felt very guilty if I were to use any of their ideas or suggestions because the teacher places so much emphasis on doing your work by yourself.
And also, think about a time when you've written about a topic in one class but you couldn't use that paper again for another class even though it is the same topic. It is frowned upon, but why? You are the one who wrote it so you're not plagiarizing. But instead you have to rewrite the paper.
So just instances like these...when teachers want you to do work for their class and not use any ideas or suggestions from others or maybe even yourself from previously. I wasn't talking about resources as in textbooks and things like that.
Beki,
Beki,
I believe it is so important to be resourceful in teaching because it will only help us not hurt us. Not only does it enhance our own thoughts and provide us with new ideas of our own, it also helps us manage our time more efficiently.
Oh the teacher lounges. It's funny because my co-op teacher eats lunch in her room instead of going to the teacher lounge. I haven't quite figured out why that's the case but I did hear her mention she would rather be antisocial and eat alone. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I on the other hand believe it is very important to establish positive working relationships with collogues. After all, we are supposed to be working together for the greater good of our students.
I think since there is a new generation of teachers becoming employed it is important to set the standard. It is ok to converse with other teachers during the lunch hour but it is not ok to talk negatively about the students. I believe we need to be leaders and set the example. I know this can be a difficult feat but it is our duty not only as teachers but also as Christians.
